About the role
Ecclesiastical Insurance Canada, who are proudly part of Benefact Group, are looking for a Financial Accountant to join our Toronto office.
Reporting to the CFO, the Financial Accountant supports the finance team by ensuring accurate financial reporting, preparing journal entries, and reconciling all GL accounts. This role is responsible for general accounting, reinsurance accounting, billing and collections from reinsurers, tracking financial close calendars, leading the planning and budgeting process, and supporting both internal and external audits. Additionally, the Financial Accountant plays a key role in assisting with management, regulatory, and Head Office reporting.

Key responsibilities
General Accounting and Financial Reporting
- Prepare monthly income statement, expense exhibits, and variance analysis reports.
- Prepare quarterly and annual OSFI P&C-2 returns, including supporting schedules and management reports.
- Prepare reports for Canadian Board meetings and Head Office.
- Track financial close calendars to ensure timely completion of reporting requirements.
- Ensure all policy and claims transactions are processed in the system and manually enter any necessary adjustments.
- Perform account reconciliations to ensure accuracy and resolve discrepancies.
- Provide external auditors with the information required for the interim and year-end audits.
- Ensure adherence to IFRS17 accounting policies.
- Assist in maintaining the general ledger and ensuring compliance with accounting policies.
Reinsurance Accounting
- Process reinsurance entries, including billing, collections, and reconciliations.
- Prepare reinsurance recoverable aging reports.
- Complete reinsurance exhibits for reinsurance brokers and Head Office.
- Maintain reinsurance contracts repository.
Investment accounting
- Process monthly investment journal entries and prepare investment schedules and analysis reports.
- Monitor compliance of the investment portfolio with risk appetite statements.
Planning
- Lead the preparation of the annual budget and financial forecasts.
- Prepare all planning-related reports and schedules for local management and Head Office.
- Assist in variance analysis and cost control measures.
Other Tasks
- Identify opportunities for process enhancements, implement internal controls, and leverage technology to optimize financial operations and efficiency.
- Ensure the timely and efficient completion of miscellaneous projects assigned by the CFO or other designated individuals.
- Support other finance teams as needed.
Knowledge, skills and experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
- CPA designation (or working towards completion) preferred.
- 2 years of experience in general accounting and financial reporting.
- Proficiency in financial systems and advanced Excel skills for financial analysis and modeling.
- Strong ability to manage deadlines and work effectively in a team environment.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Proficient interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
