1887
Ecclesiastical Buildings Fire Office is founded in the UK to protect churches from fire.
1890
We make our first charitable donation of £1,000 – the first of many contributions to the greater good.
1940's
We play our role in repairing bomb damage during WW2.
1952
Our expertise in risk management is recognised, as we advise on the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
1972
Ecclesiastical sets up Allchurches Trust to preserve the Group’s independence and ensure all future profits go to charities and good causes.
1974
We open our first office outside the UK, in Toronto, Canada, specialising in church property.
1980
International expansion continues, with the opening of an office in Dublin, Ireland.
1988
We launch Ecclesiastical Investment Management Ltd.
1998
We acquire Ansvar’s businesses in Australia, New Zealand and the UK.
2006
We launch a funeral planning business – Ecclesiastical Planning Services.
2008
We move into broking services, as SEIB joins the Group.
2009
We buy a stake in Lycetts, eventually taking full ownership in 2014.
2011
We’re praised for our handling of around NZ$1bn in claims after an earthquake devastates Christchurch.
2014
SEIB acquires Lansdown Insurance Brokers. The Group also sets itself the challenging target of giving £50m to charities and good causes in three years.
2016
We’re a year early in reaching our target of giving £50m to charities and good causes over a three year period.
2019
The Group acquires a stake in Lloyd & Whyte. We also launch our Movement for Good Awards to give over £1m to charities and good causes each year.
2021
We open our new Gloucester head office and pass £150m of giving in seven years.
2022
We rebrand the Group and the Trust as Benefact Trust, setting a new strategy to double in size, be most trusted advisors and become the UK’s top corporate donor.
2023
We become the UK’s third largest corporate donor to charity (DSC Guide to UK Corporate Giving, 2023-24) and are proud to insure Westminster Abbey, home to the Coronation of King Charles III.
